Tipped now for Tippers

I gave myself a silly challenge. One week. Tip every person who actually deserved it. No cash in my pocket, no QR codes, no armbands, no “I’ll sort you out next time.”

Tipped is on the App Store now. I downloaded it on a Monday, and by Friday I had paid seven people. All I typed was a cellphone number. Android, same app, Google Play.

The number is the whole magic trick

You open the app. You type their cellphone number. You pay. They get an SMS. They do not need Tipped installed, a card, a code on the mirror, or a band on their wrist. They sign up when they feel like it, and the money is already waiting under their name.

That is it. I kept waiting for the catch. There wasn’t one, so I took the app out with me. The screen is literally called Pay to Cellphone. Number in. Amount in. Done.

Thee benefit vs eWallet or Payschap, the Tippee, the person who receives the tip or payment now is part of Tipped and can earn many more Tips, payments for all of the great deeds.

A very normal week, if you tip like a maniac

Salon on Monday, still in the cape, phone in my lap. Barber on Tuesday, clippers buzzing, me settling up before he even spun the chair around. Wednesday was dinner, then a coffee the next morning because I was on a roll. Thursday I paid the car guard from the driver’s seat and the fuel attendant at the pump. Friday a delivery rider got a tip at my front door before I’d even taken the box.

Payment three comes with a Vida

Here is the bit I was not expecting, and the reason I am still opening the app. Make more than two payments in Tipped and there is a free Vida on us. Fees drop once you are signed up, so the third tip costs you less than the old card-machine dance. Deals from Pick n Pay and Takealot show up in the same wallet. Vida, it turns out, loves Tipped.

Download the app

They get the good part

The SMS is not a receipt they can frame. It is the money. They sign up once and they are on Tipped too. People who live on tips are lifting their earnings by more than 30% a month when paying takes ten seconds, because the guest who used to shrug and leave actually pays.

A stylist does not wait for the jar to be split on Friday. A housekeeper is not hoping the front desk remembers her name. A car guard can send money home to his family from the same phone, still standing in the parking lot. A server coming off a dinner shift can stop at the spaza and buy bread, a cool drink, maize meal, with money that is already hers.

I like that part more than the free coffee. The coffee is excellent. The look on someone’s face when the SMS lands is better.

If you tip people, download it and save the numbers you use all the time. The salon. The barber. The guard on your street. Next time you will not pat your pockets. You will type.

Meet Nico: A Car Guard Who Jumped on the Tipped Boat

Charl’s Activation Day

A flood. A man stranded on his rooftop. A rowboat, a motorboat, a helicopter… all sent to save him. Each time, he waves them off: “No thanks, God will save me.” The water rises. He drowns. In Heaven, he asks God why He didn’t answer his prayers.

“I sent you a rowboat, a motorboat, and a helicopter,” God says. “What more did you expect?”

I think about this story every time I activate Tipped at a business. I show up offering a way for staff to triple their tip income: a rowboat, if you like. Some people grab it immediately. Others wave it off.

The Problem He Uncovered

When I activate Tipped, I meet two kinds of people:

  • The willing: curious, open, quick to see the upside.
  • The resistant: “It’s a scam.” “Cash is king.” Case closed, before I’ve finished a sentence.

Here’s the irony: the same people who refuse to try something new often go home complaining about the cost of living, waiting for someone else to fix it.

Before Tipped, I ran a coaching business, and I saw this pattern constantly. People who transformed their lives had a growth mindset, willing to learn, willing to be wrong. People who stayed stuck usually weren’t short on opportunity. They were short on openness.

That’s the real problem Tipped runs into on the ground: not the app, but the mindset standing in front of it.

How Tipped Solves It

This is where Nico comes in.

Nico is a car guard, hands weathered by the sun, years spent watching over other people’s cars for whatever cash came his way. When I first sat with him, he asked question after question, his hand trembling slightly as he wrote his name.

Then it clicked. Nico signed up for Tipped, and within weeks he was earning three times what he used to.

What won him over wasn’t just the app’s ease of use, it was the human side of it. A tech-support team that patiently answered every question. For Nico, Tipped wasn’t software. It was a way out.

That’s the whole point of Tipped: it doesn’t just modernise tipping, it puts real money back in the hands of people like Nico… reliably, transparently, and with support that actually shows up.

Conclusion

There will always be copycat apps chasing what works. Do your homework, and choose the real thing.

More businesses are recognising Tipped’s value every day and people like Nico are proof of why.

So here’s the question: when the boat drifts by, will you take the hand reaching out?

Tipped is here!

How Sasol Increased Forecourt Staff Income by 30% With Digital Tipping

How Sasol and Tipped turned customer appreciation into a measurable employee benefit — increasing staff income, supporting retention and giving Sasol data-driven visibility into tipping behaviour.

The challenge: recognising the people behind great service

For customers filling up at a Sasol station, the forecourt attendant is often the face of the experience.

They help customers, clean windscreens, check tyres, assist with fuel and make sure every interaction is positive.

But traditionally, tipping has depended heavily on cash.

That creates a problem.

Customers increasingly carry less cash, while businesses have limited visibility into how much their frontline employees are actually receiving in tips.

Sasol wanted to make it easier for customers to recognise great service while creating a more modern, secure and measurable way for forecourt staff to receive those rewards.

That’s where Tipped came in.

Turning customer appreciation into additional income

With Tipped, customers can scan an attendant’s QR code and send a digital tip directly to them.

There’s no need to find cash or download another app.

The employee receives the tip digitally and can manage their money through their Tipped wallet.

Sasol publicly described the rollout as part of its effort to make tipping easier and more convenient for customers while empowering forecourt staff.

And the results were significant.

30% more income for frontline employees

The most important result was simple:

Employees earned 30% more from tips.

Digital tipping removed one of the biggest barriers to tipping — having cash available.

Customers could reward an attendant immediately after receiving great service, using a simple digital experience.

For employees, this meant more opportunities to earn additional income from the service they were already providing.

And importantly, the benefit went directly to the people delivering the experience.

From tipping to employee retention

For frontline employees, additional income is only part of the equation.

Feeling recognised matters too.

Sasol’s own employee engagement reporting highlights the importance of employees feeling valued and recognised, alongside creating a sense of belonging.

Digital tipping gives that recognition a tangible outcome.

Instead of a customer simply saying:

“Thanks for the great service.”

the employee receives a reward that demonstrates that appreciation.

Over time, this creates a stronger connection between:

Great service → Customer recognition → Additional income → Employee engagement → Retention

For Sasol, Tipped became more than a payment mechanism.

It became another tool for recognising the people who interact with customers every day.

Giving Sasol visibility into frontline behaviour

One of the biggest advantages of moving tipping from cash to digital is data.

Previously, Sasol could not easily see the full picture of tipping behaviour at its stations.

With Tipped, Sasol can gain visibility into metrics such as:

  • Total tips received
  • Tip value
  • Average tip value
  • Tips by location
  • Employee performance
  • Tipping frequency
  • Trends over time
  • High-performing locations
  • Employee participation
  • Customer tipping behaviour

This creates a completely different conversation around employee rewards.

Instead of asking:

“Are our employees receiving tips?”

management can start asking:

“Where are employees receiving the most tips, what is driving that performance, and how can we replicate it?”

From a tipping solution to a management insight

The data generated through digital tipping can help Sasol understand the relationship between customer experience and employee performance.

For example:

Which stations generate the most tips?

This can highlight locations where customer service is particularly strong.

Which employees consistently receive recognition?

This can help identify employees who are delivering exceptional customer experiences.

When does tipping increase?

Patterns can reveal how customer traffic, promotions, seasons or operational changes influence tipping.

Where is tipping underperforming?

This can identify locations where additional employee engagement, training or activation may be required.

The result is a feedback loop that wasn’t possible with cash.

Building a more connected frontline workforce

For Sasol, the opportunity extends beyond increasing tips.

It’s about creating a stronger connection between the customer, employee and business.

Customers get an easier way to say thank you.

Employees earn more and receive visible recognition.

Sasol gets data and insights into frontline customer engagement.

That’s a much bigger opportunity than simply replacing cash with digital payments.

The future of frontline recognition

Sasol’s rollout of Tipped demonstrates how a simple customer behaviour can become a powerful employee engagement tool.

By making tipping easier, Sasol helped its frontline employees earn more while giving the business a new source of insight into customer recognition.

And for the employee standing on the forecourt, the message is simple:

Great service deserves to be recognised.

Tipped makes that recognition easier, more rewarding and measurable.
