Terms governing access to and use of the Tipped™ platform and Services
Entity: iThemba Voucher (Pty) Ltd t/a Tipped™ (Registration No. 2020/601718/07)
Effective date: 4 August 2026
Contact: support@tipped.biz |
These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) form a binding agreement between you and iThemba Voucher (Pty) Ltd t/a Tipped™. Please read them with the Tipped™ Privacy Policy and any transaction-specific information shown before you confirm a transaction.
Important: Tipped provides technology that connects users to third-party payment, wallet, payout and value-added service providers. Certain clauses limit liability, allocate risk or allow a transaction or account to be delayed, reversed, restricted or suspended. Nothing in these Terms excludes a right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded under the Consumer Protection Act, POPIA or another applicable law.
1. About Tipped and acceptance
Tipped owns and operates the Tipped application, website, QR journeys, corporate tipping platform and related technology.
You accept these Terms when you register, select an acceptance control, access an account or use a Service. If you do not agree, do not register or use the Services. If you use Tipped for an organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to bind that organisation.
2. Definitions
- Account means your registered Tipped profile and the functionality enabled for it.
- Access Code means a PIN, password, OTP, biometric authentication or other credential used to access or approve activity.
- Service means a Tipped app, website, QR or NFC journey, wallet feature, tip or reward function, cash-out, payment, voucher, VAS, support function or corporate tipping feature.
- Tip means a voluntary payment intended for a Tippee, whether made directly or through a group or split-tipping arrangement.
- Tippee means a person registered or identified to receive tips or rewards through Tipped.
- Tipper means a person who initiates a tip or payment through a Tipped journey.
- Transaction includes a tip, reward, wallet credit or debit, purchase, transfer, voucher issue, cash-out, refund, reversal or adjustment.
- Wallet means the digital balance and transaction functionality made available through Tipped with third-party wallet infrastructure. It is not a bank account or investment product.
3. Eligibility and registration
You must be at least 18 years old and have legal capacity to use the Services, unless Tipped expressly approves a lawful guardian-consent arrangement. You may register only for yourself, using accurate, complete and current information.
You may hold only the number of Accounts permitted by Tipped. You must not create duplicate, false or impersonated profiles. Tipped may require a unique cellphone number, identity information, a selfie, supporting documents, bank details and any other information reasonably required for security, KYC, AML, fraud prevention or service delivery.
You must keep your information updated. Tipped may restrict a feature until information is complete, verified or corrected.
4. The Tipped service model
Tipped is a technology platform and transaction conduit. It enables information and payment instructions to move between tippers, Tippees, merchants, employers, banks and specialist providers. Tipped is not a bank, card scheme, telecommunications provider, employer, tax adviser or seller of a third party’s goods or services.
Tipped controls its core platform and Tippee database. A transaction may nevertheless be processed, settled, paid out or fulfilled by a third party. The relevant provider may apply its own lawful terms, limits, verification rules, processing times, reversal rights and privacy notice.
5. Current service providers
The current service chain includes:
- VALR for wallet-related functionality;
- Paysoft for cash-out and bank payout processing;
- Stitch and Yoco for incoming tips and payment processing;
- Scan to Pay for spending and payment functionality;
- 1Voucher for airtime, data, vouchers and other value-added services; and
- Ideco for AML screening and related compliance checks.
Tipped may replace or add a provider where reasonably necessary to operate, secure or improve the Services. A material change that affects your rights or use of the Services will be communicated as required by law.
6. Wallets, balances and verification levels
Your Wallet shows a digital record of value available for permitted Services. A displayed balance is not an interest-bearing deposit, investment, credit facility or promise of a financial return. Wallet functionality, limits and permitted Transactions depend on your verification level, risk status, available balance, provider rules and applicable law.
Tipped may offer a starter or limited wallet before full verification and may require an upgrade before cash-out, transfer or higher-value use. Current limits, fees and available features are displayed in the app, website or relevant product information and may change on reasonable notice or immediately where required by law, risk controls or a provider.
A Wallet entry may be pending until the relevant payment or settlement is confirmed. Tipped may correct a duplicate, erroneous, fraudulent, reversed or charged-back entry and may recover an amount incorrectly credited, after giving notice where reasonably practicable.
7. Receiving tips and rewards
A tip is voluntary. A Tipper must confirm the intended Tippee or group, amount and payment details before authorising payment. A successful payment instruction does not guarantee immediate availability if a payment provider, bank, card scheme or risk review delays or reverses settlement.
Where group or split tipping is enabled, the allocation is made according to the rule configured by the participating organisation or authorised administrator. Questions about the fairness or employment treatment of that rule must first be raised with that organisation. Tipped will investigate whether the configured technical rule was applied correctly.
Tipped does not guarantee a level or frequency of tips or rewards. Tips do not create an employment relationship between Tipped and a Tippee. Users remain responsible for any personal tax, employment or reporting obligations that apply to amounts received.
8. Spending, Scan to Pay, VAS and vouchers
You may use available Wallet value for supported purchases. Before confirming, check the merchant, beneficiary, amount, product, cellphone number and other details. Transactions authenticated with your Access Codes are treated as instructed by you unless you report unauthorised use promptly and an investigation shows otherwise.
Scan to Pay Transactions are also subject to the participating merchant’s and provider’s rules. A dispute about the quality, delivery or return of goods or services must ordinarily be raised with the merchant, while Tipped will assist with the payment record or technical processing where reasonably possible.
Airtime, data, voucher and VAS products are fulfilled through 1Voucher or the relevant product provider. Once a voucher, PIN or product has been successfully issued, viewed, delivered or redeemed, it may not be cancellable or refundable except where required by law or permitted by the provider. You are responsible for protecting voucher codes and entering the correct recipient details.
9. Cash-outs
Cash-outs are processed through Paysoft to an eligible South African bank account. The bank account must belong to you and the account details must be accurate. Tipped may request proof of bank account ownership and may reject or hold a cash-out where the account name, identity information or other details do not match.
A cash-out cannot ordinarily be cancelled once submitted for processing. Processing time may be affected by cut-off times, weekends, public holidays, bank availability, incorrect details, compliance checks or provider delays. Any estimated processing time is an estimate unless Tipped expressly states otherwise.
10. Fees, limits and connectivity costs
Fees and charges applicable to a Transaction will be displayed or made available before confirmation, where required. A Tipper may be offered the choice to pay a fee or allow the fee to be deducted from the amount received. You authorise deduction of a disclosed fee when you confirm the Transaction.
Tipped may apply daily, monthly, per-transaction, wallet or verification-level limits. Limits may be reduced temporarily for risk, security, provider or legal reasons. Your mobile network or internet provider may charge data, SMS or connectivity costs separately.
11. Your security responsibilities
You must:
- keep your PIN, password, OTP, voucher code and device secure and never share them with another person, including someone claiming to be Tipped support;
- use accurate contact and bank details and keep them updated;
- review every Transaction before confirming it;
- use current app and device software and reasonable security controls;
- log out when using a shared device and never allow an activator or support agent to retain your credentials; and
- notify Tipped immediately if your device, SIM, Access Codes, identity information, bank details or Account may have been compromised.
Tipped will not ask for your full PIN, password or OTP through an unsolicited call, email or message.
12. Acceptable use
You must not use the Services to:
- break a law, sanctions restriction, payment rule or third-party right;
- commit fraud, money laundering, terrorist financing, bribery, tax evasion or other unlawful conduct;
- misrepresent an identity, workplace, beneficiary, Transaction or source of funds;
- process sham, self-funded, circular, duplicate or manipulated tips or Transactions;
- access another person’s Account or collect their information without authority;
- reverse engineer, scrape, copy, interfere with, overload, test without permission or introduce harmful code into the Services; or
- use Tipped in a way that harms users, providers, Tipped or the integrity of the payment system.
13. KYC, AI and AML checks
Tipped uses AI-assisted KYC to verify identity documents, selfies and related information. An automated outcome may approve an Account, request a new submission, pause onboarding or refer a matter for human review. You may request human review and provide supporting information if an outcome is adverse or inconclusive.
AML screening is performed with the assistance of Ideco and other lawful sources where required. Tipped may request identity, address, bank, source-of-funds, source-of-wealth or transaction evidence at registration or at any later time. You authorise Tipped and relevant providers to verify submitted information against lawful databases and records.
Tipped may be unable to explain a restricted AML, sanctions, suspicious-activity or law-enforcement action where disclosure is prohibited. Compliance decisions are escalated through Tipped’s approved compliance process and are not decided by ordinary support staff.
14. Account restrictions, suspension and closure
Tipped may delay a Transaction, restrict a feature, suspend an Account or close an Account where reasonably necessary for security, compliance, investigation, provider requirements or protection of users. Reasons may include:
- poor-quality, expired, inconsistent or unverifiable documents or selfies;
- incorrect, duplicate, false or mismatched identity, cellphone or bank information;
- suspected unauthorised access, fraud, abuse, chargebacks or unusual activity;
- an AML, sanctions, criminal, risk or regulatory flag;
- a legal, court, regulator, bank, payment-scheme or provider instruction;
- breach of these Terms or another applicable service rule; or
- a material technical or security risk.
Where lawful and reasonably possible, Tipped will explain what information is needed or how to request review. You may contact support@tipped.biz to challenge a restriction or provide evidence. Tipped may keep a restriction in place while an investigation or legal duty continues.
You may request Account closure after pending Transactions, disputes and amounts owed are resolved. Closure does not cancel a completed Transaction or require deletion of records that Tipped or a provider must retain by law.
15. Refunds, reversals and transaction disputes
Report an incorrect, duplicate, failed or unauthorised Transaction promptly and provide your name, registered cellphone number, Tipped account identifier if available, Transaction reference, amount, date and supporting evidence.
Tips and completed Transactions are ordinarily final. A refund or reversal may be available where required by law, authorised by the payer and recipient where appropriate, permitted by the relevant provider, or supported by evidence of a technical error, duplicate processing, fraud or unauthorised use. Tipped may not be able to reverse value already paid out, spent, redeemed or transferred to a third party.
A bank, card scheme, payment provider or merchant may initiate a chargeback or reversal under its own rules. If an amount previously credited to you is lawfully reversed, Tipped may adjust your Wallet, place the amount on hold or recover an overpayment, subject to applicable law and reasonable notice where practicable.
16. Service availability and third-party dependencies
Tipped aims to provide reliable and secure Services but does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free availability. The Services rely on providers, banks, card schemes, telecommunications networks, internet access, electricity, devices and signal. Maintenance, upgrades, security events, regulatory action or a provider outage may cause delay, interruption or temporary unavailability.
Tipped will take reasonable steps within its control to prevent and remedy faults, protect users, communicate material incidents and restore affected Services. A feature may be changed, paused or withdrawn where required for security, compliance, provider availability or product improvement.
17. Third-party goods and services
Tipped facilitates access to certain third-party products and payment services but does not manufacture, supply or control the underlying airtime, data, voucher, merchant goods, banking service or network. The relevant merchant or provider remains responsible for its own product, fulfilment and independent legal obligations.
Tipped remains responsible for the parts of the Service that it controls and will provide reasonable support to trace a Transaction or refer a provider issue. Nothing in these Terms removes any direct right you have against Tipped or a provider under applicable law.
18. Intellectual property
Tipped and its licensors own the application, platform, source code, databases, designs, content, workflows, trade marks, patents and other intellectual property used to provide the Services. Tipped grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive and non-transferable right to use the Services for their intended purpose while your Account remains active.
You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, license, reverse engineer or exploit the Services or Tipped intellectual property except where the law expressly allows it.
19. Privacy and communications
Tipped processes personal information as described in the Tipped Privacy Policy. You agree to receive essential account, security, compliance, support and Transaction communications by app notification, email, SMS, WhatsApp or telephone using your registered details.
Marketing communications are sent only as permitted by law. You may opt out of marketing without affecting essential service messages.
20. Warranties and limitation of liability
Tipped will perform Services within its control with reasonable care and skill. To the extent permitted by law, Tipped is not liable for indirect, special or consequential loss, loss caused by inaccurate instructions or information supplied by you, or a failure wholly outside Tipped’s reasonable control.
Tipped is not responsible for an independent merchant’s goods or services, a bank’s rejection, a network outage, a provider’s processing delay or unauthorised Account use caused by your failure to protect Access Codes, except to the extent that Tipped caused or contributed to the loss through its own breach, negligence or unlawful conduct.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for fraud, wilful misconduct, gross negligence, death or personal injury caused by negligence, breach of a non-excludable statutory duty, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited. Any limitation must be interpreted consistently with the Consumer Protection Act.
21. Your responsibility for loss caused to others
You are responsible for direct loss reasonably caused to Tipped or another person by your fraud, deliberate unlawful conduct, material breach of these Terms or unauthorised misuse of the Services. You are not responsible for loss caused by Tipped, a provider or circumstances outside your reasonable control.
22. Changes to the Services or Terms
Tipped may update these Terms to reflect changes to the Services, providers, fees, risks or law. The updated version and effective date will be published through the app or website. Tipped will give reasonable advance notice of a material adverse change unless immediate implementation is required for security, fraud prevention, law or a provider instruction.
If you do not accept a material change, you may stop using the Services and request Account closure, subject to pending Transactions, disputes and legal retention duties. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance where permitted by law.
23. Complaints and disputes
Contact support@tipped.biz first so that Tipped can investigate. Include the information and evidence listed in clause 15. Tipped will acknowledge, investigate and respond within a reasonable period based on the complexity of the matter and any provider dependency.
If a dispute is not resolved informally, either party may use a competent South African court or any consumer, privacy, financial or industry complaint mechanism with jurisdiction. These Terms do not prevent urgent court relief or restrict a non-waivable statutory remedy.
24. Governing law
South African law governs these Terms. The Services are intended primarily for use in South Africa and in South African Rand unless Tipped expressly states otherwise.
25. General
If a provision is unlawful or unenforceable, it will be limited or removed only to the extent necessary and the remaining provisions will continue. A delay in enforcing a right is not a waiver. You may not transfer your Account or rights under these Terms without Tipped’s written consent. Tipped may transfer its rights and obligations as part of a lawful restructuring, merger or sale, subject to applicable notice and privacy requirements.
